Deputy Leader of Jumhooree Party, Ameen Ibrahim has said that a price set by previous government at a certain time is not a reason to raise electricity bills now.
Ameen made this remark following the claim of Fenaka Corporation that the government stopped giving subsidies for electricity given to merchants which raised their bills because the government set the rate to the rate decided by the Energy Authority on 2009.
He said that it is foolhardy to make such a claim after coming to power pledging to decrease the electricity usage charges.
Ameen said that the government is tyrannizing the people with such baseless excuses by withholding subsidies given to electricity, farmers, fishermen and others.
He said that it is the people who are suffering from these irrational and also oppressive decisions of the government.
Ameen said that the Economic government was ignorant of the fact that raising electricity bill will hike the prices of commodities and services.
Ameen made this remark speaking at the press conference held at Adhaalath Party office following the protests held in Kulhudhufushi and Addu City regarding the raise in the electricity bill.
Ameen said that the electricity of some shops on the month of February was MVR 8000 and on March it was MVR 21000.
He said that this shows that the claim of being champions of economy is a delusion and a deception. He said that the government lacking knowledge that the increase in the electricity costs will bring raise the price of commodities and services is enough evidence for this.
