High Court has accepted the appeal of the remand of the three political leaders arrested during the crackdown on the opposition protest held on Friday.
In a press conference held at the Adhaalath Party office yesterday, lawyer Ali Zahir expressed hopes that the appeal case will continue in the High Court and the three leaders, MDP Chairperson Ali Waheed, Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdulla, and Jumhooree Party Deputy Leader Ameen Ibrhaim will be released soon.
Ali Zahir said that the three leaders are kept in very small cells that were built very recently. “The problem of pests is present in these cells. We have managed to arranged fans for the cells now after discussions with the Human Rigths Commission and other authorities,” he said.
Ali Zahir said that political detainees should not be dealt like this by the government.
Police arrested 195 people, including minors, and the leaders of all the main opposition parties.
MDP Chairperson Ali Waheed, Adhaalath Party President Sheikh Imran Abdulla, and Jumhooree Party Deputy Leader Ameen Ibrhaim were all arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning, following a court order alleging them of attempting to overthrow the government.
The crackdown constitutes one of the biggest mass arrests in the Maldives’ history.
An estimated 25,000 people poured onto the streets of Male’ on Friday afternoon, demanding an end to tyranny and the release of political prisoners.
