Lawyers of the protestors detained during the Mayday protest have stated that the protestors are kept in very harsh conditions.
The lawyers stated that they are kept in very small cells which leak water during rainy days. They said that the cells gets very muddier and dirtier during rain.
Lawyer Fareesha said that 25 people are kept in a 6 feet 25 feet small cell. She said that there is not enough ventilation and the only ventilation available in the cell is a small space where which an exhaust fan used to be.
She said that the prisoners have to improvise various space-saving tricks to let all to sleep in the small cell.
Fareesha said that every time that the lawyers visit Dhoonidhoo to meet the protestors they are only able to meet about 6 of them. The excuses given by the Police includes the change of duties, tea time for the Police and other such reasons.
She said that earlier they could meet up to eleven at night but now the meeting time is till sunset.
Among the people arrested included students who were going home from college.
Despite these violations of human rights, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dunya Maumoon that Maldives has achieved “remarkable” progress in human rights promotion, socio-economic development, and democracy consolidation.
