“Maldivians with Nepal” telethon has raised more than MVR 1.7 million.

Maldivians coming to the aid of the Nepali people still reeling from the recent earthquake, through local fundraising campaigns by the media.

Maldivian Red Crescent stated that so far they have raised MVR 1736113. 26.

The telethon is held by Red Crescent in cooperation with the local media. The telethon was held yesterday from afternoon 12:30 to evening 18:00.

It had been a week and a half since the massive earthquake that killed more than 8300 people and injured more than 19,000.

It was the worst natural disaster to strike Nepal since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake. Some casualties were also reported in the adjoining areas of India, China, and Bangladesh.

Hundreds of thousands of people were made homeless with entire villages flattened across many districts of the country. Centuries-old buildings were destroyed at UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley, including some at the Kathmandu Durbar Square, the Patan Durbar Square and the Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Geophysicists and other experts had warned for decades that Nepal was vulnerable to a deadly earthquake, particularly because of its geology, urbanization, and architecture.
