Restrictions made on foreign expatriate employment
The Economic Ministry has announced their decision to prohibit foreign expatriates from working in certain professions.

The Ministry confirmed that the professions where expatriates will not be able to invest in are in the field of photography, passenger transfer services, water sports recreations industry and operating bonded warehouses.

Conversely, out of these professions which have been restricted, expatriates are permitted to be employed in passenger transfer services as well as the water sports recreations industry in the circumstance where the companies own either 51 per cent or 100 per cent of the shares.

The Ministry informed that the regulation will be applied commencing from the 7th of June.

The Economic Ministry explained their reasoning for the restrictions stating that constraints were made in the intention of creating more businesses and employment opportunities for Maldivian nationals.
