Ameen, Sobah, Imran to be tried under terror charges: Media Reports
Local media reports have surfaced that Jumhooree Party (JP) Deputy Leader Ameen Ibahim, JP Council Member Sobah Rasheed and Adhaalath Party (AP) Chairperson Imran Abdullah is to be tried under terrorism charges for their participation in the May Day anti-government mass rally.

The reports have yet to be confirmed by Prosecutor General (PG) Office and the Courts.

It has not been confirmed whether Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson Ali Waheed, who was arrested in the protest, would be tried on the same charges.

The four had stated that they had not called for violence either within or outside of the protest. They all state that they had only called for negotiations with the State.

However, Police stated that the protest had turned violent only after the senior leaders of the protest had called for direct action against the Government.

President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom had stated that there was no limitation on the number of protests that the public can hold, so long as they were within the legal means. He said that in the case where the protests are unlawful, the relevant authorities will take action.

While media reports had surface of the possible terror charges against these individuals, Sheikh Imran and Ameen Ibrahim have been designated as representatives from their respective parties for the negotiations with the Government.
