Customs wins WHO’s World No-Tobacco Day Award

Maldives Customs Service has been presented with the World Health Organization’s recognition award for its contributions in the area of tobacco control
.

Chief Superintendent Mr. Abdulla Waheed represented Customs to receive the award at the official reception held last night to mark this year’s World No-Tobacco Day.



Every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes individuals or organizations from the six regions (Africa, Americas, Eastern Mediterranean, Europe, South-East Asia and Western Pacific), for their accomplishments in the area of tobacco control such as research, capacity building, promotion of policy or legislation and advocacy to enhance tobacco control.


Deterring and preventing attempts to smuggle tobacco in and out of the country and enforcing tobacco-related laws and regulations at entry and exit points are a part of Customs’ responsibility, together with the collection and delivery of up-to-date and accurate tobacco statistics.
