Adhaalath Party (AP) President Sheikh Imran Abdullah has been arrested by Police.
Maldives Police Service (MPS) reported that he was arrested under a court order issued to the Police and that no additional details can be made regarding the arrest.
Some local media have reported that Sheikh Imran was arrested to bring him to the hearings of the case against Imran, which are to be held either today or tomorrow.
At the time of his arrest, many had gathered near his residence and called against the Government’s unjust actions. When Sheikh Imran was led out of his home, many had reported that he called out to the public not to give up hope in the national movement against the Government.
Many believe that Sheikh Imran would also be subject to a speedy trial and a speedier verdict with a long jail term, similar to that of former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is presently serving a 13 year jail term on terror charges.
