President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has stated that Maldives does not need any incentives in place of loss of Maldivian identity and religion.
He made the statement speaking in the maahefun held for the elderly held last night in Alimas Carnival area.
President Yameen stated that the present Government would not allow any other religion to take foothold in the Maldives. He added that some foreign nations have placed sanctions on Maldives for this view. As such, he noted that Europe had hiked the duty amount for Maldivian tuna.
He stated that UN Charters had granted the independence for all nations to conduct their own affairs and that this should not be interfered by the foreign nations. President Yameen stated that Maldivian policies will be dictated by the Constitution and not what is imposed by other nations. He also stated small nations should be given the opportunity to conduct their own affairs independently like that of the bigger nations.
President stated that he was willing engage with nations who believe and adhere to set and just principles.
“I will ally with those who respect the laws, believe in principles and respect peace,” he said.
He said that Islamic principles and laws have already been specified and clear to all. He added that all the laws in the Constitution may not be acceptable to all, but the essence of democracy is respect to all views and the majority.
President Yameen stated that if there were no laws, there would be chaos. Therefore, the better option for the whole of the nation was for all to obey them.
