Nolhivaram Constituency MP Hussain Areef has called on the Parliament to speed up the work on the key bills in the Parliament and to hasten the incentives to be given to the public.
Speaking in today’s Parliament session, Areef stated that it has been a year since Makunudhoo Constituency MP AnaaraaNaeem had submitted the Bill for incentives to differently abled. He said that key bills such as this need to be passed at the earliest date and the incentives to be given out prior to the start of Ramadan.
He also said that he was in support of standardizing Ramadan allowance for all civil servants. However, he said that this was not enough in ensuring economic equality for all. Areef also called on the Government to speed up their work on subsidies for farmers and fishermen.
He added that since 2009 there has been no increments made for the salaries of the civil servants, even though there has been many increases to the prices of goods, duties and taxes. Areef stated that due to this the daily lives of many have been impacted.
Areef stated that Ramadan allowance was an incentive granted once a year and as such did not contribute much to alleviating the struggles of the common man. He said that setting a minimum wage for civil servants would alleviate the situation greatly.
Areef noted that there were thousands of government employees who did not receive a monthly salary of MVR 5000. Therefore, he argued that the best solution for the issue was to ensure that a minimum wage was set.
