President Yameen has stated that the contributions made by the elderly to the nation and the citizens cannot remain unrecognized.
He made the statement speaking to them in a ceremony held in Carnival. First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim also took part in the ceremony.
Speaking in the ceremony, President Yameen stated that if Maldivians held onto the culture and values, it would be impossible to forget the invaluable contribution made by the senior citizens of the nation. He added that senior citizens were key in building the nation and showing a strong example to the youth of the nation.
President Yameen stated that the foremost principle of any nation is independence and if a nation was not independent it was not nationalistic. He also stated that no Maldivian would chose a life of slavery and that UN Charters dictate that all nations have the right to self-determination as well.
President Yameen spoke of the characteristic values of Maldivian society, such as hospitality and respect to all. Citing that Maldives had always been a peaceful nation, he said that the Government was seeking to revert the society to its former state.
He highlighted that societal harmony was essential to economic progress and the self-sufficiency of the nation. He added that it was vital that Maldivians were free from foreign influence. President Yameen stated that it was saddening to see the foreign influence in the last few months of political instability.
