Maldives Police Service (MPS) has stated that the Institution had not received information regarding the rally to be held on Friday organized by opposition MDP and AP.
Speaking in a press conference held yesterday evening, Chief Superintendent of Police Abdullah Nawaz stated that the organizers have not yet informed of the rally, which is clearly stipulated in the Freedom of Assembly Act.
He had not directly stated that the Police would disband the rally. However, he stated that if the protest was against the means set in the Constitution.
“There are principles set in the Constitution regarding the protests. If the protests are against them, we believe that they are unconstitutional and the Police would act in such cases,” Nawaaz said.
Nawaaz stated that so long as the protest was constitutional, they would give the legally mandated security services. However, he stated that these security measures can only be granted if the protest organizers fulfill their obligations.
Nawaaz stated that if the protest is illegal and breaches the rights of the public, the protest would be disbanded and their cases would be filed with the Prosecutor General.
