President Abdullah Yameen has forwarded three nominations for the position at Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), which included former Member of Parliament for Central Fuvahmulah Constituency ShifaqMufeed.
President’s Office Spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali stated that 33 people had filed their applications for the position. He stated that the President had chosen Shifaq, AishathAfreen Mohamed and AiminathEenash as his nominees for the position. Muaz stated that none of the nominees are members of any political parties.
Shifaq was elected to the Parliament on the ticket of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). He had joined Jumhooree Party (JP) in 2013 elections and had shifted to ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (MDP) last year.
The announcement was made for prospective applicants as the term of three members will expire this year. As such, the terms of Commission PresidnetMariyamAzraa, Vice President Ahmed Tholal and Member Jeehaan Mahmood will expire this year.
