National Movement has stated that the Government was attempting to disrupt the Friday mass rally.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentary Group (PG) Group Leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) stated that the Government was attempting to prevent the Friday rally. He stated that the rally was organized after careful consideration to the planned activities. As such, he noted that the protest would not hamper the ongoing night market.
However, Ibu noted that the night market was extended to the 13th of this month and postponed the planned lecture by renowned scholar Mufti Menk to Friday. The lecture was to be initially delivered on Thursday.
MDP Deputy Leader Mohamed Shifaz stated that there were some concerns as the Dhiraagu Road Race was scheduled for the same date. However, as the protest would take place in the night there would be no clashes. Additionally, the Road Race had been postponed following the extension of night market to the 13th of this month.
Galolhu South MP Ahmed Mahloof stated that this protest was run legally and as such the Police and the Government cannot stop the protest. He added that the form and the sms were unnecessary means designed to halt the protest.
“Constitution states that no prior notice is required for the protest,” Mahloof said.
Shifaz stated that the purpose of the protest was to show that the citizens would not stand for the continued injustices perpetrated by the Government.
Ibu stated that the protest will take place even if the Government attempts to halt the rally. He added that many will be joining the rally from the islands.
