Elections Commission (EC) has fined opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Adhaalath Party (AP) following their participation in the May Day protests.
EC had fined AP by MVR 60,000 and MDP by MVR 53,000. EC had added that the fines have to be paid within a week.
EC reported that the two parties were fined for their breaches of Political Parties Act and Freedom of Assembly in the May Day protest. EC noted that the Parties had acted in a manner that had encouraged protesters to engage in violence, attack Police officers and damage individual properties. EC added that the two Parties had failed to follow the EC specified guidelines for such protests

EC stated that the two parties were fined under clause 48 of Political Parties Act.
A letter sent by EC to the two parties had advised to carry out political rallies and events according to the guidelines specified in the Constitution.
