Parliament Committee for Independent Institutions has passed the amendment proposed set an age criteria for future Presidents and Vice Presidents.
The amendment was proposed by ruling coalition member Party MDA by MP Mohamed Ismail. The amendment was passed with no modifications and without the vote of the opposition.
The amendment proposed to Clause 109, subsection (c) states that Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates have to be between 30 to 65 years old.
Presently, the Clause states that they have to be above 35 years, with no restrictions on the maximum age.
Opposition MPs had supported the motion to lower the age criteria to 30 years. However, they had refused to accept the age cap at 65 years.
Opposition MPs stated that with the way the motion was passed, Supreme Court will make a final decision on the Presidential term, if the President turns 65.
