The start of yoga can be traced to over a thousand years. Even though yoga’s origins are that of a religious origin, yoga is a practice that is accepted world over for the many health benefits. It is a practice that is observed by thousands across the world, irrespective of religion.
Today is the first international yoga day. The day is an initiative spearheaded by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The day will see 180 nations carrying out various activities to mark the day. Therefore, it can be said that the first international yoga day is so far a success.
International yoga day will start off in India, with official activities in front of Indian Presidential Palace. It is expected that around 35,000- 45,000 people will take part in the activities.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present at the 35-minute public demonstration that includes civil servants and students, many of whom have been ordered to practice their chaturangas etc.
The yoga classes conducted in Male’ Social Center are quite successful, with almost full classes and many more signing up for the waiting list.
Many more are learning yoga from the classes conducted in the Indian Cultural Center.
Indian High Commissioner Rajiv Shahare stated that in the short period since the Center opened up, over 2,000 had signed up for the classes.
The activities in Male’ for international yoga day will kick off at 8.30 am from Social Center, with more activities planned to be held in Artificial Beach area at9.00 pm tonight.
