Wastage goes against spirit of Ramadan
International Fiqh Academy Member Hassan bin Mohamed has stated that wasting is an aspect that is forbidden in Islam and such practices can negate the benefits of the fast for the Muslim.

“Wasting any item that you have bought or received is a transgression against the blessings of Allah. We have to fear that. Ramadan is the month we have to spend on those who are in destitute times. In carrying out such actions, we can reap the benefits of the month,” he said.

Wasting is a concept that it against the principle of Islam. Therefore, any action that goes against the principles set in Islam, would not yield any benefits to the person. This is more profound when we take into account what we give up in the month of Ramadan. In the same way we observe more prayers, we have to observe how much we waste and prevent such wastage.

Many scholars have emphasized on this as well, given the fact that many food items are wasted every day.

This is particularly evident in the mosques of Saudi Arabia, which receives many food items every day for those who break the fast in the mosques. Many civil organizations have taken action.

Nura Al Raafee is one such individual. She collects the leftover food from the mosques, preserves them and hands them out to those families residing in tents. Nura stated that this project is a very successful one, carried out with the participation of civil organizations and the Saudi authorities.

We must take example from such initiatives. We have to focus on donating excess food and minimizing waste.
