Adhaalath Party (AP) has expressed their concerns regarding the medical condition of their jailed President Sheikh Imran Abdullah.
AP stated that Sheikh Imran has been seeking long term treatment for complications arising from high blood pressure and high blood sugar. The Party added that the tests conducted after his arrest show alarming rises in his uric acid and cholesterol levels. Additionally, he is facing worsening issues to his spine as he has to sleep on hard mattresses.
The Party reported Sheikh Imran’s wife has shared this information with Home Ministry and Human Rights Commission of the Maldives.
The AP statement said that Sheikh Imran was being treated against the clause 21 of Constitution which is on the security of self, clause 54 concerning banning inhuman punishments, clause 57 concerning humane treatment of those arrested. Additionally, the statement added that the government had failed to observe the responsibilities specified in clauses 16 and 18 of the Constitution. The statement condemned the treatment dished to Sheikh Imran in the month of Ramadan.
The Party added that Sheikh Imran was detained for the duration of the hearing. However, the statement noted that the Court is in recess and there was no judge presiding over the case.
Additionally, the Party noted that the High Court ruling 2015/HC-A/203 had decreed that Sheikh Imran should be shifted to house arrest due to his health concerns and stressed that this should be put into effect.
The Party statement concluded by stating that Sheikh Imran was arrested on suspicion of a crime and that he posed no flight risk. Additionally, the Party noted that Sheikh Imran had not encouraged any violence but used his constitutional rights to exercise free speech. Therefore, the Party statement said, that he was detained on false charges with no judicial reason.
