The planned vote on the age of Presidential candidates held yesterday had shown that most of the Parliament supports the Government.
The vote on the age criteria for Presidents and Vice Presidents to the 30 to 65 year age gap, was passed with an overwhelming vote of 78 MPs out of the 80 MPs who took part in the vote.
Galolhu South Constituency MP Ahmed Mahloof and Kendhoo Constituency MP Ali Hussain voted against the motion.
A total of 64 votes was required to pass the motion. The motion was passed with the votes of opposition MDP, Jumhooree Party and Adhaalath Party’s vote.
Speaking in the debate session of the Bill, Henveiru Central Constituency MP Ali Azim expressed his concerns over the issue that the amendment he proposed was not tabled for debate. He stated that he had proposed that anyone above the 18 years old can contest for the posts of Presidents and Vice Presidents.
The Speaker’s desk stated that this amendment was proposed after the deadline had expired. Members of JP supported the motion after Party leader Qasim Ibrahim issued a request to support the motion.
MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said that the Party had supported the motion as the benefits of supporting the motion outweighed the disadvantages.
Speaking after the vote, Kendhoo Constituency MP Ali Hussain said that voting against the majority was a hard one. However, he said that he had voted against the motion in the defense of the Constitution.
