Islamic Ministry has stated that forcing drug users to undergo rehabilitation is not part of Islam and Islamic values.
The Ministry disclosed this in the sermon released on Friday in connection to the Drug day.
The sermon said that in the event a drug user confesses to his usage, then he can undergo rehabilitation. Sheikh Yoosuf Garzaavee and many scholars stated that in the event a drug user hands himself over to the relevant authorities that can be taken as a sign of their atonement. They agree that such people should be given proper rehabilitation and given a chance of normal lives.
However, the sermon said that in the Maldives the situation is very different. The sermon said that in the Maldives it can be seen that the Police take an active role in finding drug users and forcing them to undergo rehabilitation in order to “correct them”. The sermon cited that this road of forced rehabilitation did not contribute to the drug user’s mental wellbeing and any desire to amend their behavior.
However, the sermon agreed that they have to be given the punishments that are mandated by the law.
Scholars agree that drug users have transgressed God’s laws and have to be accountable in front of God.
