Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has held preliminary discussion with the Government on the nature of future negotiations.

The discussions were held last night in the President’s Office, with the Home Minister Umar Naseer representing the Government. MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih represented the Party in the discussions.

Speaking to the press after the discussions, Minister Umar said that the discussions were only centered on the way future discussions would be held. He added that the formal discussions will begin on Sunday.

Minister Umar said that the Government was willing to negotiate with MDP in order to bring about healthy changes in the Maldivian society.

“Due to tonight’s discussions, the internal political situation would stabilize a lot. This is what the Government wants. We want to ensure that the development projects of the Government would proceed without delays,” Minister Umar said.

Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated that the Party had presented some stipulations to the three main stipulations presented by the Government to kick off the negotiations. He said that one of the stipulations was that the negotiations should include all of the opposition parties.
