Former Islamic Minister Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Baaree has called to free educational institutions from political influence.
Speaking in the rally held last night under the banner “ending injustice”, Dr. Baaree stated educational institutions have to be freed from political influence, irrespective of who is ruling the country.
He added that he did not believe that the Maldives National University Bill was not an amendment as it did not bring about positive changes. Dr. Baaree said that the Bill did not create benefits and was inherently dangerous.
He said that the present changes to the Bill will create an institution that was full of corruption. As such, Dr. Baaree noted that the entire administration of the University would be overhauled and overseen by a 15 member Council. Out of the 15 members, nine are presidential appointees.
“This also includes the position of Chancellor, Vice Chancellors and Deputy Chancellors,” Dr. Baaree said.
Dr. Baaree concluded by appealing to MPs to reflect on the Bill and not to vote for the Bill.
