Jumhooree Party PG Deputy Leader and Kimbidhoo Constituency MP Abdullah Riyaz has tabled the issue of the non-disclosure of the list of child sex offenders in the Government Oversight Committee of the Parliament.
MP Riyaz tweeted last Tuesday, questioning on why the list was not made public and on who would be responsible if such an incident occurred. His tweet added that he had put forward this issue to the relevant Committee in the Parliament.
A motion letter sent by MP Riyaz to the Chair of the Government Oversight Committee, Riyaz Rasheed, stated that even though Police was conducting investigations into multiple cases, child sex offenders were continuously preying on innocent children with no hesitation. The letter was sent of the 14th of this month.
He added that the issue was submitted to the Committee as the list had not yet been made public. The law mandates that the list must be made public and online.
Riyaz requested the Committee to carry out proper investigations into the issue and enact the required legal measures for non-disclosure of the list. His letter also called on all government agencies to ensure that the rights of the victims were upheld throughout in the process.
Riyaz’s letter stated that the law states that information of sex offenders must be compiled, published, accessible online and SMS short codes, in order to deter them from such crimes.
Riyaz, in his tenure as Commissioner of Police, had worked to combat the sexual advances and attacks on children. In the light of recent cases, the public also has highlighted this as a critical issue.
