Zakat fund collection from Male’, Vilimale’ and Hulhumale’ has increased by half a million Rufiyaa compared to the previous year.
Islamic Ministry reported that last year Male’ City Council had collected MVR 3.2 million last year, while this year, the amount MVR 3.69 million. The Ministry also reported that 13,000 had signed up to receive zakat. Last year, MVR 220 per person was distributed as zakat.
The number of those claiming zakat had decreased this year due to stringent categories set by the Ministry for those claiming the benefit.
This year, 7,440 had registered to receive the benefits. Islamic Ministry is to distribute MVR 500 per person. This is an amount that is double the amount paid last year.
Islamic Ministry’s State Minister Ali Waheed reported that the list of claimants need to be checked and that the Ministry would be doing so.
Deputy Ministry Sheikh Ibrahim Ahmed said that the number of claimants dropping is an indicator of improving conditions for the public and the economy.
