Former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom has stated that the President had full rights to remove the Vice President from his position midterm for various reasons, even though the position is an elected office.
He made the statement speaking to press in Ibrahim Nasir International Airport after concluding his trip to Oman as a Presidential Ambassador.
President Maumoon stated that he had not instructed President Yameen on the matter, citing that he would neither advice on appointing or not appointing certain persons to the position. He added that he would always adhere to the Constitution in all issues.
Some members of his party, ruling PPM, had spread an SMS allegedly penned by President Yameen, which stated that he did not wish to see Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb appointed as Vice President. President Maumoon had denied the rumors.
President Maumoon had recently praised Minister Adeeb for his role and capabilities as part of the Cabinet.
