President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has stated that the biggest challenge that was faced historically was the southern island’s insurrection while the nation was under the protectorate of the British Empire.
He made the statement in the official address in the ceremony held in Usfasgandu to mark the Minivan 50 celebrations.
President Yameen said that this was the biggest threat that faced our nation, which was spearheaded by certain groups. He also said that it was significant that in the 2300 years of recorded history of the
nation, Maldives had developed many diplomatic relations with a diverse array of nations and had largely been exempt from the colonialism that gripped most of the world.
President Yameen cited that in the time our nation had gone under foreign rule was due to the personal greed of a select few and added that it was bleak times for the nation. He noted that in the past it can be seen that in the times we lost independence, the incident occurred not only for political purposes. He warned against foreign influence in internal affairs, citing that this had previously contributed to the loss of the nation’s independence in the past.
