Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Dunya Maumoon visited the High Commission of India on Wednesday and offered condolences on behalf of the Government of Maldives and people on the death of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India.
Foreign Minister wrote in the Condolence Book that Dr. Kalam “was a great man and a visionary leader who inspired millions of people around the world and in India. Maldives values his great contribution towards Maldives-India relations”.
Earlier, H. E. President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom conveyed his condolences to President Shri Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India on the passing away of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. In separate messages, President Yameen described the former President late Dr. Kalam as a close friend of the Maldives and said that his legacy as a leader of firm convictions and profound knowledge would live on forever, and that his demise was a loss to the region.
Several Maldivian dignitaries, Ambassadors and senior diplomats of friendly countries and Indian nationals visited the High Commission to pay their condolences and signed the condolence book.
The last rites of former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was taken place with full honours in his hometown Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu on 30 July 2015.
