President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has stated that the Government’s negotiations with the opposition parties were halted for the Minivan 50 celebrations but now is the time to restart the discussions.
He made the statement speaking in the ceremony held in Muleeaage to welcome four new signatories from Fuvahmulah to ruling Progressive Party of Maldives.
President Yameen stated that the purpose of the discussions were to ensure that a peaceful environment was created and those Parties willing to engage in negotiations on those terms were welcome to the negotiations. However, he said that if the opposition sets terms for the discussions then the purpose of the discussions had failed. He added that the Government would not engage in discussion on such grounds.
President Yameen added that former President Mohamed Nasheed was under house arrest for health reasons. He also added that Nasheed had appealed his case, which is now under review by the PG, after taking into account national interest. He added that he believed that the internal situation of the nation will revert to normal once the appeal process has been concluded.
