Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has stated that the tourists en route to Diego Garcia from Addu had acted in a manner that was highly concerning.
Speaking in a press conference, Major Adnan Mohamed stated that the tourists had attempted to find a vessel in which they would be able to leave Maldivian waters and enter Diego Garcia waters. Additionally, the tourists had inquired on what they can and cannot do whilst on the trip.
Adnan stated that the vessel had begun its journey from Maradhoo around 18:05 the previous evening and that MNDF had started search for the vessel once the case was reported. He added that the operation was undertaken to ensure that the vessel was not carrying out any actions that may hamper Maldivian interests in the international community.
Adnan added that in incidents of this nature, there was a high probability that tourists and locals may fall into danger.
