Fisheries and Agriculture Minister Dr. Mohamed Shainee has stated the effects of climate change not only hamper the environment but impacts fisheries, agriculture and health as well.
He made the statement speaking in the ceremony held in Hotel Jen to introduce the National Policy on Environment yesterday.
Dr. Shainee stated that the interval between fishing periods have increased due to the changes in the surface temperature of the seas. Additionally, he noted that climate change has spurred changes in rainfall patterns which in turn effects farming periods.
He noted that the Government had initiated an insurance scheme to protect fishermen and farmers from such changes to their livelihood.
He cited that due to climate change, a rise in temperature by 2 degrees would cause damages to low lying nations such as ours. However, Dr. Shainee noted that such changes spell some benefits for northern nations. As such, for some northern nations, farming sector can expand by 40 percent and the fisheries sector would expand as well. Therefore, Dr. Shainee stated that there were some differing opinions on the importance of climate change, globally.
