President’s Office Spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali has refuted the claims made by opposition MDP and stated that in the multi party negotiations the Government had not agreed to enact any measures.
Speaking to PSM, Muaz stated that while MDP national congress had passed to halt the negotiations, the Government had not been formally notified of it. He also said that the MDP had opted to distance themselves from the work carried out for the benefit of the public.
He added that MDP had reported that the talks, which had been only temporarily halted for the Minivan 50 celebrations, were successful. He also added that the decision by MDP to halt the talks was a cowardly act.
Muaz said that the negotiations were undertaken on the matter of public interest and as such, the Government would not seek to uphold the interests of one party alone. He added that the Government had not abandoned the negotiations and was open for negotiations.
MDP National Congress passed the motion to halt the negotiations, after former President Nasheed was shifted to jail from house arrest. MDP had claimed that Nasheed was transferred home due to the negotiations and as such had hailed the negotiations as a success.
Both Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Husham and Interim Home Minister Dr. Mohamed Shainee had stated that Nasheed was under house arrest temporarily on doctor’s orders. Dr. Shainee had assured that the Government had not agreed on clemency for Nasheed.
