Former President Mohamed Nasheed’s wife, Laila Ali, was summoned to Police on Friday, in order to enquire regarding the written statement claimed to have been released by Maldives Correctional Service, ruling that former President Nasheed was permanently transferred to house arrest.
Police Media Official reported that Laila was summoned to Police, as they had not been able to clarify the details when they had gone to her residence, M. Yaagoothuge, to enquire on the matter.
The area was surrounded by MDP supporters and Police had barred the area even to the media.
Laila’s lawyer, Hisaan Hassan, said that she was summoned to the Police with no fault on her part.
Protesters had voiced their displeasure, citing that this was an attempt to belittle Nasheed and his family.
Looking at the country’s history, former President Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom was the first President to be summoned to Police. Nasheed is the second one. Laila was the first spouse of a President to be summoned to the Police.
