Commissioner General of Customs Abbas Adil Riza has stated that the Service was developing as the Service was delivering results.
He made the statement speaking in the ceremony held Friday night to mark the 125th anniversary of the Service.
Abbas stated that Customs was working to ensure that the business environment is made safe and secure for investments and is a low risk environment. As such, low risk products are to be cleared at a cheaper cost and faster. He added that high risk products will be subject to more stringent clearance and security procedures. He also said that the Customs was working to ensure that they were more productive, thereby reducing the operational costs.
Abbas said that the Customs was aiming to provide all of their services via their online portal and expediting their services.
Abbas stated that once the Kulhudhuffushi portal was established, it will become the virtual hub for almost all Customs services.
He added that 600 Customs staff had been trained from various fields last year. Additionally, 6 international training sessions were held in the Maldives in which 79 officers were trained. An additional 77 officers were trained in 41 training sessions held abroad. Abbas said that presently, 8 officers were in training in other countries and 50 officers were studying locally.
He added that an additional 20 customs officers were studying in Shanghai Customs Academy in order to prepare for the “One Belt One Road” initiative.
