Former President Mohamed Nasheed’s lawyer, prominent human rights lawyer, Amal Clooney, has stated that the meeting held with Attorney General Mohamed Anil was extremely insightful and successful.
She said that in the meeting discussions were held on ways that President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom can offer clemency to Nasheed within the legal limits. She added that the legal team had requested to meet Prosecutor General but was denied an appointment.
Amal said that discussions were held on the status of other political prisoners and on not pressing charges against those protesting for their personal freedoms. She also added that Nasheed was commuted to house arrest and then rescinded the order. She said that this was not an action of a legal government.
State had denied issuing a request to transfer Nasheed to house arrest. The case is still under investigation.
