A bicycle round was held to mark the official events of this year’s international Tourism day.
Participants of the event started the event from Social Centre and concluded in Raalhugandu area. Tourism Ministry reported that the event was held in cooperation with UNDP and the Ministry as part of the Tourism Adaptation Program. Bike Maldives, Environment Ministry and MMPRC assisted the event.
Some of the participants stated that stated that even though vehicles such as cars and cycles were used during office hours, it was vital that environmentally friendly vehicles were used during other times. Speaking before the race, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim had appealed and encouraged all to use bicycles more.
Speaking in the closing ceremony of the event, Tourism Ministry’s Deputy Minister Hussain Lirar stated that the Tourism Adaptation Program was vital to low lying nations such as the Maldives. Lirar also stated it was extremely remarkable that a huge number of people took part in the event.
