International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has stated that Maldives had made significant successes in the field of renewable energy.
IRENA Director General Adnan Z. Ameen made the statement speaking in the ceremony held in Kurumba Maldives to finalize the renewable energy road map. He stated that even though Maldives has been successful, there was still plenty of room for improvement.
He said that improvements can be made in the tourism sector and called for more participation in the endeavor by the private sector.
President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has recently stated that Maldives has to implement more measures for the environment. He said that fixing a solar panel in one’s home was not sufficient and added that it has to be carried out on a wider platform. He noted that renewable energy is used to generate electricity in G.Dh. Thinadhoo and Addu city. President Yameen also noted that Maldives has the world’s only resort which runs fully on renewable energy.
Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizz, current interim Energy Minister, spoke in the ceremony, citing that the aim of the government was to generate 30 percent of all electricity needs of the country from renewable energy sources. He added that the IRENA renewable energy roadmap will assist in achieving the nation’s energy policies.
In the workshop, details of the roadmap was shared with the participants as well as the challenges facing the sector. A total of 40 participants took part in the workshop.
