Maldives Police Service has stated that they have significant issues in tracking down top up and reload scammers.
Speaking to Miadhu, a police official said that obtaining required permits to find the owners of the scam numbers is difficult. He said that authorities in most cases had declined to release the information citing that such information was private. He added that obtaining court orders to process the cases was an extremely difficult.
The official said that the number of top up and reload scams had increased over the past few weeks and stressed the importance of public awareness on such scams.
It has been reported that Police had requested the assistance of Telecommunications Authority of Maldives to identify the scammers.
