Dhiraagu CEO and Managing Director Ismail Rasheed has stated that Dhiraagu customers will receive additional benefits and services next year.
He made the statement speaking to Miadhu on the occasion of the company’s 27th anniversary. Rasheed said they have submitted their plan for next year to the company’s board of directors which will be put into place once the board approves the plan.
Dhiraagu has established itself as a pioneer in the telecommunications industry with globally recognized services available in the country. As such, the whole of Maldives is linked by telephone service. After that, Dhiraagu introduced mobile telecommunications services and broadband services. Additionally, the whole of Maldives is now linked via a fibre optic cable, which will be in operation for the next 40 years. All these services were provided within the company’s 27 year history, which is highly significant.
Rasheed said that Dhiraagu was always aiming to provide better services at affordable prices to all customers.
Dhiraagu has over hundreds of staff working in the company out of which only one employee is an expatriate. This is a remarkable first for a local company and a milestone. Additionally, the company has initiated an apprentice program which trains fresh minds for various positions in the company.
Dhiraagu was initially formed as England’s Cable and Wireless Company in 1978, under former President Ibrahim Nasir’s tenure. The initial agreement was for ten years after which Dhiraagu came into formal existence, partly owned by Cable and Wireless Company and the Government of Maldives. Therefore, Dhiraagu is one of most key legacies left by President Nasir. Up until the formation of Cable and Wireless, only landlines were in existence in Male’. That changed rapidly after the formation, after which, telecommunications services expanded widely across the nation.
