The Climate Change Adaptation Project launched

The Government of Maldives (GOM), the World Bank, European Union (EU) and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) have together launched the Climate Changed Adaptation Project (CCAP) under the umbrella of the Maldives Climate Change Trust Fund (CCTF) today.

The Project was launched by the Minister of Environment and Energy Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim. The European Union Ambassador to Maldives, His Excellency Mr. David Martin Daly and Ms Kseniya Lvovsky, the Practice Manager of Environment and Natural Resources for South Asia of the World Bank also participated in the ceremony.

The Climate Change Adaptation Project, which would cost a total of 4.2 million US dollars, would take concrete action to manage protected mangroves and coral reefs in the two Southern most atolls of the Maldives: Addu City and Fuvahmulah. Under this project, the tourist resorts and dive schools in this region will partner with MEE to monitor the coral reefs and mangroves. Basic infrastructure required to establish ecotourism facilities in the protected wetland areas would be established to ensure that their protection provides economic benefit to the communities in these regions. The Project would also implement measures for waste management in the protected.

The project will enable the local governments and communities to implement a clear strategy for wetland management, coral reef monitoring and waste management through tangible pilot projects designed to improve adaptive capacity and climate resilience in the targeted sectors of the project
