Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor has stated that President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom had given assurance to Egypt that Maldives will support Egypt’s bid to serve as a temporary member of the UN Security Council.
He made the statement in a meeting held yesterday morning in President’s Office with Egyptian President’s special envoy, Khatham Al Saeed Thaqaddin.
Speaking in the meeting, the two dignitaries held discussions on how to capitalize on the decades old relationship between Maldives and Egypt.
Vice President Adeeb also thanked the envoy for the warm welcome and hospitality extended to him when he visited Egypt for the opening of the second Suez Canal. He congratulated President Abdul Fattah Al Sisi for the industrial marvel the second Suez Canal was and added that the canal will facilitate further growth for the nation.
Envoy Thaqaddin expressed his concerns over the incident aboard the Presidential speedboat and wished a speedy recovery for the injured in the incident, especially for First Lady Fathimath Ibrahim. He added that Egyptians were in solidarity with the Maldivians at this critical juncture.
In the meeting the envoy handed over a letter written by President Sisi to be delivered to President Yameen. Vice President Adeeb accepted the letter and assured that Maldives will back the Egyptian bid to join the UN Security Council for the duration of one year, starting next year. The vote is scheduled to be held on the 15th of this month.
President’s Office Minister and Acting Foreign Minister Mohamed Hussain Shareef and Minister of Foreign Minister’s Additional Secretary Ibrahim Shaheeb took part in the matter.
