International media have acclaimed the Maldivian fisheries sector, especially on the nation’s focus on sustainable fisheries.
Even though Maldives has been practicing sustainable fishing for decades, this aspect had come to forefront after Fisheries Minister Dr. Mohamed Shainee won International Pole and Line Fishing Award.
The award was given to honor the government’s efforts to maintain the nation’s sustainable fisheries sector, by the International Pole and Line Foundation (IPNLF). John Burton, Chairman of IPNLF, said that such efforts has to be encouraged and rewarded. He added that if sustainable fisheries is not practiced then, the global fish stocks would get depleted.
Dr. Shainee has been a strong proponent of sustainable fisheries, campaigning heavily on global platforms for the initiative. Various international media have noted the Minister’s efforts on the initiative.
