Ruling coalition partner MDA Deputy Leader Ahmed Amir has said that treason should be made a punishable offense under the constitution.
Speaking to Miadhu on Thursday, Amir said that national independence was the most significant aspect and a direct contributor to Islam in the nation. He said that world bodies such as a UN, EU had accepted Maldives as the nation was an independent and sovereign nation based on a constitution.
Therefore, Amir stated that a foreign body calling on Maldives to carry out and order that goes against the constitution was unacceptable.
Amir added that if such a body wished to instill any aspect not in the constitution then they must first consult the Government. He stated that going against such measures did not befit the stature of such international bodies.
