Cancer Society of Maldives have reported that the numbers of people diagnosed with breast cancer is higher than previously estimated.
The Society made the statement as part of the three day activities to raise awareness on breast cancer.
Cancer Society President Juwairiya Saeed said that testing was carried out in three atolls, as part of the activities, and that the number of suspected cases was more than previously anticipated.
She said that it was a key concern that testing services were not available in the islands and added that it was difficult for most women to travel to male’ for testing. Juwaira said that even if a patient tested positive for cancer, treatment has to be sought from abroad, which is almost always expensive.
As part of the activities a TT stand has been established in Huravee building with access to breast cancer information available for patrons.
