Former Health Minister Dr. Mariyam Shakeela has stated that allowing depression to fester after being diagnosed with cancer was the biggest hamper on recovery.
Dr. Shakeela, who had been previously diagnosed with breast cancer three times, urged all to approach cancer with high spirits and a normal lifestyle.
She made the statements speaking in the opening ceremony of the three day campaign to raise awareness on breast cancer.
Reflecting on her personal experiences, Dr. Shakeela said that each time she was diagnosed with cancer, she sought to establish a normal lifestyle and achieving her personal goals while undergoing treatment. She said that she was alive today because she didn’t depend on just one mammogram or one ultra sound.
Dr. Shakeela stressed that the society needed to change their views on cancer and urged all to get tested if suspected for breast cancer or any other type of cancer.
In her short tenure as Health Minister, Dr. Shakeela had attempted to reform the sector.
