HRCM calls to Review the Anti-Terror Law
The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) calls to review the recently ratified Anti-Terror bill, so that it will not interfere with the fundamental rights of the people.

In the statement released by HRCM yesterday, they said that their grievances towards the new bill was shared with the attorney general on the 15th of April, and that they were alarmed as none of the issues raised were addressed before the bill was passed.

Additionally, they said that this new Anti-Terror bill - passed by the Parliament and ratified by the President - was going to be a huge barrier to their work of safeguarding the rights of the Maldivian people.

Although the bill was earlier returned for revision after much debate on the parliament floor, not much was amended by the committee. The bill was passed with a majority of 49 votes, 22 votes were received against the bill, while 3 MPs’ abstained from the vote.

Opposition have raised accusations that this bill was specially targeted to crack down on opposition political activities.
