Today is the 27th anniversary of the terror attacks of 3rd November 1988. The biggest win of that day was the public and the patriotism of the public.
Tamil terrorists had planned to gain the whole of Male’, they were foiled in their attempts to gain control of the defense headquarters. The terrorists had surrounded the headquarters. The public were unable to do anything, as they had no weapons.
Luthfee and Sagar Nasir were amongst the terrorists, looting, harming and arresting people at whim. At the time, many members of the public were not supportive of the Government. However, they all refrained from joining the terrorists. The public had full knowledge of where the leaders of the nation were but had refused to divulge their locations to the terrorists.
The terrorists had not succeeded in their endeavor due to the patriotism of the public and their fervent desire to remain as a sovereign nation. We have to analyze if the government had appreciated the public’s actions of that day. This will be valuable for the future of the nation.
No Maldivian will not handover the reigns of the nation to any foreign entity. The events of 3rd November 1988 was a clear indication of this.
