President’s Office Spokesperson, Ibrahim Muaz Ali, has stated that rising to power by assassinating an incumbent President will never be accepted by the public.
He made the statement, condemning the assassination attempt on the President on 28th September.
Minister of Defense and National Security Adam Shareef had likened this assassination attempt to the terror attacks of 3rd November 1988, which was an attempt to overthrow the Government and destabilize the nation. He added that the recent discovery of suspicious devices and IED’s across Male’ were subsequent events to the assassination attempt given to President aboard the Presidential speedboat.
Maldives Police Service had also confirmed that a Sri Lankan sniper was arrested on 24th October in connection to the case. The service had confirmed that the sniper was tasked with murdering the President.
The Army had revealed that sniper rifle parts and shells were found in the raid carried out on B. Him’balhidhoo. Additionally, Police had revealed that pictures of the items discovered from the island were found in the phone of a person who had been arrested in connection to the case.
