Chinese company to build 1500 flats in Hulhumale’
Chinese construction company, China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), has been contracted to build 1,500 medium income housing units on the new land that has been reclaimed in Hulhumalé second phase.

Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu signed the contract on behalf of the government at a special ceremony held at Hotel Jen. Managing Director of CMEC Shi Jin Tao signed the contract on behalf of the company.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Muizzu said that these would be the first housing units being built in the second phase of Hulhumalé. He added that while the land has be reclaimed in the Hulhumalé second phase, a lot of work is still under way to develop the land.

He said that active work on constructing the housing units would begin next year, noting that people would be able to start living in the flats around May of 2018.

He revealed that 7,100 social housing units would be built in total in the Hulhumalé second phase. Proposals for the projects are currently being presented to companies.

Muizzu says that housing must be provided to those of different social standards. He noted that middle income housing units were being built because it is affordable by the biggest demographic.

He also revealed that the newly constructed housing units would be available for those who are looking to relocate from islands, adding that smaller communities can be relocated as a whole as well.
