President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Qayyoom has said that the opponents of the Government does not have their narratives straight, espousing and discarding stories at whim.
He made the statement in his address to the nation given on occasion of the 47th Republic Day.
President Yameen noted that the opponents of the Government had been constantly calling for the boycott of the tourist industry. However, he said that once the Government implemented a state of emergency over valid security concerns, the opposition was quick to point out the negative effects to the tourism sector.
He also said that the calls for boycott are coming from Maldivians. President Yameen said that this had crossed the Maldivian waters and attracted the attention of the international media.
“We have to question on the reasons for this malcontent. This is the abhorrent side of the Maldivian republic,” he said.
The President said that there were some individuals who will risk the fate of the nation for their own gain.
“Just recently, we discovered weapons hidden in various parts of the country. Weapons were discovered submerged and hidden in homes. Explosives were found in homes in Male’. Items to create such explosives were discovered. This is the abhorrent side of the Maldivian republic. The State will seek to protect the nation and the public,” the President said.
